Lyons Creek Middle School is the largest middle school in the United States to implement MicroSociety and the only middle school in Broward County to offer this program. Through MicroSociety, the students develop the skills and qualities expected of responsible citizens in any walk of life. They are provided with opportunities to develop a work ethic, explore career options, tie academics to real world applications, earn income, and develop marketable skills.

What is a MicroSociety?
Teachers, students, parents, and community partners work together to build a functioning miniature society. Young people discover the functions of money, markets, and property. They learn to run businesses, apply technology, and develop government and social agencies. Skills necessary to run the community are learned "on the job" as well as in the classroom. Most importantly, students experience the pride and benefits of their labor, as they become judges, bankers, legislators, IRS agents, and entrepreneurs in a safe and supportive learning environment. Students learn by doing, and working. Through their employer-employee relationships, they become producers and contributors, both in the MicroSociety and in the world outside school. In fact, because it is fun and creative, some students don't realize that learning is taking place. |

How can parents, businesses, and community leaders help?
A thriving MicroSociety program involves five groups of people: students, teachers, school administrators, parents, and community partners. Parents and community partners can help by sharing the knowledge and skills they use every day in the adult world of work. They can teach students about their own jobs, hobbies or interests. They can be guest speakers, advisors to particular business ventures, or mentors to individual students. Additionally, help is needed in the way of donations of supplies and other materials for producing products. It takes everyone working together to build a successful MicroSociety.
If you would like to be a "business mentor" or guest speaker, please contact our Magnet Coordinator, at the school. |
